This is an update for SunOS 4.1.1 on the sun3 platform. The update contains: 1) libresolv.a (resolv+2.1.1) 2) shared libc (with resolv+2.1.1 and Y2K patch) 3) host.conf and resolv+.8 to configure resolv+2.1.1 4) nslookup from bind-8.4.1 Q: Who can/should use this update? A: Everyone who runs a Sun3 and wants to use DNS. Q: What is needed to install this update? A: You should have SunOS 4.1.1_U1 and the following patches installed: 100267-09 (latest libc jumbo patch) Y2K-patch (from www.sun3zoo.de) Q: How do i install this update? A: Run INSTALL, test the the resolver (ping www.sun3zoo.de) and reboot. Q: What does resolv+2.1.1? A: It gives you the option to modify the behaviour of the libc function gethostbyname at runtime. resolv+ has the ability to query /etc/hosts, NIS (YP) and DNS at an arbitrary order and has some additional options. Q: What is the default behaviour of gethostbyname? A: The default behaviour is to ask NIS aka YP for ip addresses and to consult /etc/hosts, if NIS (YP) is not available. If you enable an option on the NIS (YP) server (look for "-b" in /var/yp/Makefile) the NIS server will consult DNS. Q: This sounds pretty weired. How do i configure resolv+? A: RTFM: man resolv+; vi /etc/host.conf Q: What version of the resolver library does resolv+ use? A: bind-4.8.3. This is somewhat newer than bind-4.8.1 which is used by SunOS 4.1.X. Q: 4.8.1 and 4.8.3 are pretty old. How about a newer version? A: Once i tried bind-4.9.5_pl1 and i was partially sucessful. But nowadays 4.9.5_pl1 is very outdated too. Q: Why did you put nslookup from bind-8.4.1 into the update? A: First, it is a standalone program and it does have some nifty features. Second, i tried to couple the resolver of 8.4.1 with resolv+ but to no avail (yet).
